Control

The holiday season is in full swing and for some spending time with family and loved ones becomes a top priority.  The opportunity to spend time with the ones closest to us brings good emotions and sometimes bad emotions.  Emotions can get the best of us during the holidays and it helps to keep things in a realistic perspective to save any unneeded negative thoughts, anxiety, or stress.  At Emotion Station we like to give the perspective of what can you control during these times, and what do you not control during these times.  If we focus on what we cannot control it can lead to emotional despair and ruin the precious times with our loved ones.

When looking at what we can control it becomes easier to understand that we control our thoughts and reactions to others.  Regardless of what others are doing around us we control the thoughts that we feed and the perspective that we engage.  If our thoughts are negative about the situation it can easily lead to negative emotion and reaction.  When we attempt to see the good and find the positive with our thoughts it allows to keep an open mind looking at things from the others perspective.  Our reactions are important because they can easily trigger our and other people’s emotions.  When we react from a place of anger it can promote anger from others causing a hostile environment.

When looking at what we cannot control it becomes apparent to come to the reality that we cannot control other peoples behaviors or emotions.  If we are constantly attempting to control another persons behaviors it can cause turmoil in the relationship including distance.  As much as it hurts to watch others inflict pain to us or others their behaviors are driven from their emotional standpoint and usually come with some type of resentment.  People experience different emotional states even in the same situation so the healthiest reaction is to respect the emotional state of others and give them the space and time needed to find their way.
